Nicknamed “Red Cars,” the Pacific Electric Railway interurban system spurred development of communities between Los Angeles and San Bernardino. The last Red Cars line shut down in 1961. The Pacific Electric crossing over Foothill Boulevard east of Upland was built in 1914. It was replaced in 2010 by a new span with a Main Street of America theme. This portion of the old line is now part of the 21-mile-long recreational Pacific Electric Trail. The top photograph was taken in 1914. (Route 66 Inland Empire California Association.)
